This drill is built specifically to practise circle rotation — the timing and communication two shooters need to keep swapping areas of the circle effectively.

Purpose

Builds the habit of rotating into open circle space as a coordinated pair, rather than both shooters drifting into the same area or rotating on a predictable, memorised pattern.

Setup

Two shooters in the circle, a feeder outside it, and an optional defender for later progressions.

Instructions

  1. The feeder holds the ball outside the circle.
  2. The two shooters rotate — one moving toward the front of the circle, the other dropping to the base — communicating with a call or glance each time they swap.
  3. The feeder delivers the ball to whichever shooter is in the stronger, more open position at that moment.
  4. The receiving shooter completes the shot; both then reset and repeat.

Common mistakes

The most common error is both shooters ending up in the same area at the same time — if this happens repeatedly, slow the drill down and have the pair narrate their movement out loud until the timing feels natural.

Progressions

  • Easier: Remove time pressure and let the pair rotate slowly, calling every movement out loud.
  • Harder: Add one or two defenders, requiring the pair to rotate in response to real defensive pressure rather than a clear circle.

Combine with the shooting ladder drill if shooting accuracy specifically — rather than rotation timing — needs more focused work.

Coaching points

  • Emphasise communication — a call or glance — every time the pair rotates, not just movement.
  • Watch for both shooters drifting into the same space, which defeats the purpose of rotating.
  • Keep early reps unopposed so the pair can focus purely on their own timing before adding a defender.
