A standard adult netball match is four 15-minute quarters, with short breaks between quarters and a longer half-time break — around 60 minutes of playing time in total.

Match length is one of the things that varies most between adult and junior netball, so it's worth checking which format applies to the match you're watching or playing.

Standard adult format

A full adult netball match is played in four quarters of 15 minutes each, giving 60 minutes of playing time:

  • A short break (typically around 3 minutes) between the first and second, and third and fourth, quarters.
  • A longer half-time break (typically around 5 minutes) between the second and third quarters.
  • The clock generally stops for stoppages such as injuries, at the umpire's discretion, and each team is usually allowed a short time-out per half.

Competition variations

Some competitions play shorter halves rather than four quarters, or use different quarter lengths — for example some domestic leagues use 12-minute quarters. Always check the specific competition's format rather than assuming the standard 15-minute quarters apply.

Junior and modified formats

Junior netball is almost always shorter, with quarter length varying by age group and governing body — commonly somewhere between 8 and 12 minutes per quarter for younger age groups, increasing as players get older. Because this differs by country and by programme, check with your child's club or governing body for the exact format rather than assuming a single junior standard. See the parent's guide to netball for more on what to expect at junior level generally.
