- Passing, movement
A simple, low-setup way to combine passing and movement into one flowing warm-up — easy to scale up or down for any squad size.
Purpose
Raises heart rate gradually while reinforcing accurate passing and the habit of driving into space immediately after releasing the ball — a good all-round opener before a full session.
Setup
Players spread out loosely across any open area — no goalpost, circle or markings required. Works with as few as three players or as many as fit comfortably in the space.
Instructions
- Player A passes to Player B, then immediately jogs to a new open space.
- Player B catches, pivots, and passes to any other player in the group (not back to A), then also moves to new space.
- Continue continuously — every player passes and then moves, with no fixed pattern or order.
- After 3–4 minutes, increase pace from a jog to a stride.
Common mistakes
Players sometimes revert to a fixed passing order out of habit — remind the group the whole point is unpredictable movement, closer to real match conditions than a rehearsed pattern.
Progressions
- Easier: Fix a simple rotation order for younger or newer players still learning to track multiple options.
- Harder: Add a time limit per pass to build urgency, or restrict passing to one specific pass type (e.g. shoulder passes only) to focus technique within the warm-up.
Related drills
Follow with the triangle passing drill for more structured passing work once the group is warmed up.
Coaching points
- Keep the pace brisk from the start — this is a warm-up, so light jogging intensity throughout is the goal, not standing and waiting.
- Rotate the starting passer regularly so everyone gets an even mix of passing and running.
- Use this early in a session before higher-intensity or contact-based drills.
