- Passing, movement
A simple, space-efficient drill for building passing accuracy and basic movement — needs no goalpost, so it works in any open space.
Purpose
Builds passing accuracy on the move, basic footwork after catching, and the habit of moving into space immediately after passing rather than standing still.
Setup
Three players form a triangle roughly 5–7 metres apart. No goalpost or circle needed — any flat open space works.
Instructions
- Player A passes to Player B and immediately moves to a new spot to re-form the triangle shape.
- Player B catches, uses correct footwork to pivot, and passes to Player C.
- Player C repeats the pattern, passing back to A (now in a new position).
- Continue continuously, always re-forming a triangle after each pass.
Common mistakes
New players often stand still immediately after passing — the movement afterward is just as important as the pass itself, since it's what simulates real match conditions.
Progressions
- Easier: Reduce to a fixed, walking pace with no time pressure.
- Harder: Add a defender in the middle attempting to intercept, or introduce a three-second time limit per player to simulate the held ball rule.
Related drills
Pair this with footwork drills for a focused warm-up block, or progress to a defended version once the basic pattern is comfortable.
Coaching points
- Call out the receiver's name before passing early on, then remove the call once players read movement instinctively.
- Rotate players through all three positions so everyone practises both passing and moving into space.
- Increase pace gradually rather than starting at match speed.
