Passing, catching

A simple, high-repetition drill built for exactly two players and a small patch of space — no goalpost, no third player required.

Purpose

Builds fast hands, reaction catching, and passing accuracy at close range, using nothing more than a ball and a partner.

Setup

Two players stand roughly 2–3 metres apart, facing each other, in any flat open space.

Instructions

  1. Player A passes to Player B without warning, varying the pass height and direction slightly each time.
  2. Player B catches and returns the pass immediately, using correct footwork to reset before releasing.
  3. Continue for a set time (60–90 seconds), then rest and repeat.

Common mistakes

Standing too far apart turns this into a standard passing drill rather than a reaction-focused one — keep the distance short enough that both players have to react quickly rather than having time to plan each pass.

Progressions

  • Easier: Slow the pace and call out the pass type before each throw.
  • Harder: Add a third variable — for example, one player closes their eyes briefly before each catch to sharpen reaction time, or reduce the distance further to increase urgency.

Pair with the wall toss catching drill for solo practice on days when only one player is available, and progress to the triangle passing drill once a third player joins.

Coaching points

  • Keep the distance short enough that reaction speed, not passing power, is the main challenge.
  • Call out a specific pass type occasionally to add a decision-making element.
  • Watch that both players stay balanced and don't just reach for awkward passes.
