Suncorp Super Netball
Suncorp Super Netball explained: Australia's top domestic league, its eight teams, the two-goal Super Shot, and every premier since 2017.
Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) is Australia's premier domestic netball competition, widely regarded as one of the strongest netball leagues in the world. It is owned by Netball Australia and, since 2019, has been run on its behalf by an independent commission. Suncorp is the naming-rights sponsor.
How it started
Super Netball's first season was 2017. It replaced the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship, which from 2008 to 2016 had combined five Australian and five New Zealand clubs. When that league ended, Australia launched Super Netball and New Zealand launched the ANZ Premiership.
The teams
The league has eight professional clubs:

- Melbourne Mavericks
- Melbourne Vixens
- New South Wales Swifts
- Queensland Firebirds
- Sunshine Coast Lightning
- Sydney Sirens (known as GIANTS Netball until 2026)
- West Coast Fever
Format
Teams play a home-and-away regular season, followed by a finals series for the top four that ends in a grand final.
Rules that differ from standard netball
Super Netball is known for experimenting with the rules. The best-known change is the Super Shot, introduced in 2020: in the final five minutes of each quarter, a goal scored from the outer part of the goal circle counts for two goals instead of one. The league also allows rolling substitutions, so coaches can change players during play, not just at breaks.
These variations apply only in Super Netball — international matches and community netball follow the standard World Netball rules. The Netball Super League in England and Wales adopted its own version of the two-goal shot from 2025.

Adelaide's 61–40 win over the Vixens in the 2026 grand final made them the first club to win three Super Netball premierships.
Standing in world netball
Because of the strength and depth of Australian domestic netball, Super Netball is often considered the highest standard of club netball in the world. Most of the Australian national team, the Diamonds, play in the league, and it also attracts leading players from other netball nations.
